Is grilled meat increasing your blood pressure?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  It’s almost summertime.  That means it’s time to uncover your pool and break out the grill.  But, before you do, a new study from the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health may convince you otherwise.  Studies in the past have shown that certain foods can increase blood pressure.  Although, true, this new study states that the way the food is cooked can also influence blood pressure.  High temperature cooking and the “doneness” of your meat can contribute to your hypertension risk.  If you already have high blood pressure, you may want to consider having fewer cookouts and more picnics this summer.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Learn why patients from around the globe trust Executive Medicine of Texas to their health. Visit EMTexas.com that’s EMTexas.com

This is Judy Gaman, author of the award winning book Age to Perfection: How to Thrive to 100, Happy, Healthy, and Wise and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Each day I bring you one new tip that will help you stay young and vibrant.

Do you have a green thumb? If not, you should get one. Gardening has been proven to relieve stress and increase longevity. Connecting with the earth, the smells of the fresh herbs, and the simple exercise that comes with tending a garden all play a role in improving health. In two different studies, people in their 60s and 70s who regularly gardened had a 36% and 47% lower risk of developing dementia. My challenge to you is to find a place to garden, even if it is a small space, and plant something. Make this the year you enjoy nature and eat the fruits of your labor. We want to empower you with as much health information as possible. Visit Stayyoungamerica.com for free pod casts of the Staying Young Radio Show with over a hundred different health topics. Want to live longer and healthier? Get a pet. Owning a pet like a cat or dog has been proven to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, as well as decrease stress levels. Especially dog owners have the added benefit from lower rates of obesity. Walking that dog may just save your life, not just help you keep the pounds off, but ward off diabetes too. If you don’t already have a pet, consider going to the pound and rescue one. The life you save may just be your own. We want to empower you with as much health information as possible. Are you obese?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  Obesity has been identified as a risk factor for cancer.  In that past, scientists have believed that caloric restriction may be key to preventing tumor growth.  According to new research this may not be the case.  A study published from the University of California in San Diego showed that metabolic rate may be the key to avoiding tumor growth.  Instead of caloric restriction, scientists found that time restriction may be the best option.  In the study, a control group and experimental group of mice were injected with breast cancer cells.  The experimental group that was given access to food for only 8 hours a day had a lowered risk for tumor growth.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. More research still needs to be completed.  Learn why patients from around the globe trust Executive Medicine of Texas to their health. Visit EMTexas.com that’s EMTexas.com.
