Could looking at yourself too often and too much make you unhappy? Researchers thinks so. A new study shows that people who gaze at their reflections for up to ten minutes at a time can become anxious and depressed about their looks - even if they were perfectly happy with them to start with. There’s actually a condition called body dysmorphia disorder where people constantly worry about their looks of shape. After reading this study on reflection, I have to ask myself, should we be discouraging all these selfies? One would have to conclude that snapping a picture and zooming in would cause the same affect. My advice – stop checking – everyone looks beautiful to me!

I used to give talks on color psychology and how it pertains to marketing. One think I always advised, was to never wear a red tie to an important meeting. Research had shown that you will have less respect and more hostility. Now a new study from University of Illinois shows that the color red can actually cause rebellious behavior in some people. Maybe that’s why red cars get stopped more often or red outfits give off a seductive feel. Color psychology can be a very powerful tool to business and to life in general. My advice to you parents and teachers – leave the red out of your kid’s rooms and your classrooms. Use more calming colors like green and blue. And as for that tie – know your enemy. Research their alma matter and wear that color. That little tip may just get you what you want.

Could your smart phone be baking you dumb? Researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz and University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign think so. Their research shows that we have developed a new habit of 'cognitive offloading' a phenomenon that is causing us to use our phones and computers, instead of our brains, to store information and solve problems. When we use our memories or solve complex issues, our brains flex like a muscle. When we don’t use our brains, those pathways become less active. Here’s a tip for keeping your brain sharp: Memorize phone numbers, at least one new one a day. Also, think through problems instead of just asking your smart phone for the answer.

Are you ticklish? Most of us are more ticklish as children than we are as adults. But if you’re like my dear husband, a touch of the foot will send you into hilarious laughter. Here’s a little fact about tickling that you may want to try out for yourself. The brain won’t allow you to tickle yourself. Believe it or not, the connection between your brain and other parts of your body that you can’t surprise yourself. For example, raising your foot to tickle it with your hand won’t result in a ticklish reaction like it might if someone else tickled your foot. Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself.

They say an average healthy person can survive a month without food. While they may lose weight and have problems functioning, they’d still be alive. Ironically, we respond to the bodies need for food, but we put off the need for sleep, which is actually more important to life. The longest anyone has ever stayed awake on record is 11 days and they were not able to function properly at that point. Everything from balance to brain function shut down. Most people miss just a few hours of sleep and it shows in cognition and energy levels. Sleep is critical to life. Be sure to get your seven and a half to eight hours each night.

The sense of smell can be a powerful tool. The whiff of a particular food or perfume can send you down memory lane, bring back floods of happy memories. The opposite is true too. Smells can also be triggers for bad memories. You can use this to your advantage in business and in life. Never wear a heavy perfume to an important business meeting, you never know the other person’s experience with that scent. And, if you had a bad experience, perhaps a divorce or loss of a job and its time to reinvent yourself, change your scent too. Also, reserve different perfumes for different tasks in your life. I have a different perfume for work than I do for the weekend. That way my mind is set for either a long day of tasks or hours of down time.

Here’s a little trivia for you. What do your lungs and the local tennis court have in common? If you’re thinking that tennis makes you short of breath, you’re probably right, but that’s not the answer I’m looking for. Your lungs are actually filled with little branches and blood vessels. If you had to stretch out all the parts of your lungs, the surface area would actually be able to cover a tennis court. Imagine how all that important stuff is crammed into the space of your chest cavity. It’s things like this that really make me appreciate the incredible design of the human body.
