Too many kids are experiencing emotional problems. These problems are often linked to the lack of sleep. When our bodies rest, so do our brains. Children and teens need more sleep than adults so they can grow and process all those raging hormones. It’s ok to be a parent and keep the phones and televisions off limits after 9pm. Their brains need a break from the blue light these emit in order to make melatonin, which helps the body sleep effectively. Unlike us, they also need 8-10 hours of sleep a night. Lacking in sleep causes irritability, anxiety, and mood disorders. So get those kids to sleep – you’re not just doing them a favor – your helping yourself too.

Any unusual pains should always warrant a trip to the doctor. Some pains, like breast pain, can be caused by a number of different causes. For example, some medications like anti-depressants and birth control pills can your breasts to be tender. Cystic or dense breasts can also be a cause for pain. Even wearing a bra that doesn’t fit just right can make you uncomfortable. If your breasts are warm and tender it could be a sign of infection. Breast cancer is rarely painful, so don’t assume the worst. Simply identify the problem and get your healthcare provider involved to find a solution.

Do your feet hurt at night? Foot pain from standing too long or wearing improper footwear is common, but often foot pain is a sign of bigger health issues. If your big toe is painful, hot, or swollen, it could be a sign of gout, an inflammatory condition where your uric acid is too high. Cramps in your feet could mean you are dehydrated or that you have an electrolyte imbalance. And if you are one of those cold feet warm heart people – be sure to get checked for anemia or circulatory issues. Also, if your feet swell every evening, be sure to have your heart checked out thoroughly. Never ignore your feet – they could be trying to tell you something.

Salt intake has been on the rise. The Center for Disease Control has found that most Americans are consuming twice to three times as much salt as recommended. Salt consumption has been linked to numerous health issues, including heart disease, yet we still keep salt shakers on the table and most restaurants add excessive salt to their food. The recommendation is no more than one teaspoon a day. Keep in mind, that includes the salt that is included in the cooked food, not just what you sprinkle on top. May I suggest that you never sprinkle it on top. Furthermore, salt is an acquired taste, so never salt your kids food or add more salt when you cook. Keeping things a little bland will help reset your and your family’s pallets.

I remember being told to wait at least thirty minutes after eating before I could go swimming. You probably heard it too. I was told I would get cramps, but some people have even been told they would drown. Is this true or false? FALSE – according to the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council, there is no correlation between swimming after eating and drowning. Furthermore, the theory of cramps is mostly false. Because the stomach does take extra circulation to process food, you may get tired easier, but as far as massive cramps, it’s highly unlikely. Enjoy your picnic and enjoy your swim.

There are many tales over the years that people have believed to be true. One is that waking a sleep walker can kill them. For years, people have believed that doing so could cause a heart attack. It simply isn’t true. As a matter of fact, you should wake a sleep walker to ensure that they do not harm themselves or others. Since sleep walkers can become startled or violent, the National Sleep Foundation encourages you to wake them using a loud sound, for example banging two pots together. When you wake them, be sure you are a safe distance away. If you are at risk for sleep walking, be sure to put safeguards in place that keep you from driving or walking near stairs.

The thyroid can be tricky. Too much and you feel bad and too little and you feel bad. Even the tests for thyroid can be confusing. For example, if your TSH, thyroid stimulating hormone is elevated it actually means that your thyroid is underperforming. TSH goes up when your own ability to regulate thyroid goes down. Someone with Hashimotos may experience weight gain, fatigue, and sensitivity to cold. On the contrary, someone with Graves where you have an overactive thyroid may experience weight loss, anxiety, shaky hands, high blood pressure and sweating. Get your thyroid checked every year or more often if you have symptoms. A balanced thyroid is a balanced body.
