You may have heard someone say that they can’t have gluten or that they have celiac disease. While some people just prefer to cut out gluten, many, especially those with Celiac disease, must cut out gluten. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease where the body has an inflammatory response to gluten. Often this response is painful and can cause anything from bowel changes to swelling, headaches, vomiting, and extreme fatigue. Gluten exposure is not only uncomfortable, it can increase the person’s risk for certain cancers as well. If you know someone who has gluten issues, respect that allergy and help them follow their strict diet. Even when choosing places to dine, be sure to check the menu so your gluten intolerant friends can join you.

Do you suffer from cold sores? The herpes simplex 1 virus is the root cause of cold sores and is quiet common. While there are prescription and over the counter medications to shorten the pain and reduce the appearance, there are also simple things you can use from home that work. Lemon tea bags, soaked and then applied can reduce swelling and help heal the skin. You can also use a corn starch paste where you use 1 part corn starch to 1 part water. And for prevention, be sure to ramp up your vitamin C and vitamin E levels with supplements or foods that contain these vitamins. Too keep from spreading it, keep your hands off the affected area and avoid kissing anyone until it has fully healed.

Blood clots can be a serious and sometimes deadly condition. If you sit too long, fly frequently, or have surgery, you can increase your risk for a blood clot. While there are different types of clots, I want to warn you about a kind called deep vein thrombosis, or DVT for short. This type is often found in an extremity and most likely in the leg or calf. If you experience pain or swelling in an extremity, or notice a red or hot area, notify your healthcare provider immediately. It’s always better to err on the side of caution. If caught early, blood clots can be treated before they become fatal.

If you love to workout, there are certain medications that could inhibit that workout or even cause harm. Anti-biotics can cause spontaneous tendon ruptures and exercise should be avoided for even weeks post treatment.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could diagnose Alzheimer's disease early and with a simple eye exam? The research has found that in animal studies the retina of the animals with alzheimer's have unusual patterns as a reaction to amyloid plaques--which are also markers of the disease in the brain. If we can detect it first in the eye--we can detect it faster and better in the brain!
